FROM 0 to 78m
From 0 to 78m is the title of my master's thesis project at Politecnico di Milano, presented as a photo essay set in Lipari, one of the Aeolian Islands near Sicily. The island's history is closely intertwined with the excavation and transport of pumice and obsidian stone. However, the entire pumice powder production industry was shut down following a UNESCO order, as the island is now protected and recognized as part of the world’s natural heritage. On that fateful day, everything was left behind in the industrial sites. As an urban exploration (Urbex) enthusiast, I embarked on a journey to document this event, tracing the route of pumice stone from its excavation in the mountains to its transport along the shores, capturing the remnants of an industry that has now fallen silent.
